Spartak move ahead with new stadium plans

After sharing grounds with Moscow neighbouring clubs, the Premiere League club has received permission by city officials to begin construction on its own stadium.

The club has not had its own stadium since its formation in 1992, sharing Luzhniki ground with fellow Premiere League club Torpedo Moscow. The new ground will be located in Tushino, in the northern part of Moscow.

“I hope in three years we will have our own ground,” said Leonid Fedun, director of the club’s board, who is also a vice president of Russian oil company Lukoil, Spartak’s main sponsor. Fedun said construction should start in three months and that the new stadium would have a capacity of between 30,000-40,000 and would be one of the best in Europe. He also estimated the cost of the new stadium will be EUR 100 million.
