The Primera Liga club are turning their attention to Korean-based electronics company Samsung for a shirt sponsorship deal after negotiations with betting company Betandwin appear to be at an end.
According to the Korea Times newspaper, Samsung – which already sponsors the Premiere League champions Chelsea F.C. - has offered a deal worth EUR 27 million a year for the right to put its name on the club’s jerseys.
According to Samsung boss Hwang Seong-Soo, the company will formalize its deal once the current Spanish season ends. If accepted, it is expected to be one of the biggest shirt sponsorship deals in Europe.
Several members of the club’s board were in favour of the Betandwin offer, but the majority were against an association with the Austrian-based online betting firm. The club had been negotiating with Betandwin for the past two years, at one point offering a joint partnership with another company, an offer that was rejected. Betandwin is now concentrating on other clubs, recently signing a deal with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, although the deal is not a shirt sponsorship.
