Greek communications company ERT has secured the free-TV rights to broadcast all 31 games for EURO 2008, part of a new TV rights program launched by UEFA.
For the first time in 45 years, UEFA will sell TV rights on a market-by-market basis. Greece, the defending European champions, was the first country to be approached by UEFA, along with host countries Austria and Switzerland. ERT was one of several Greek companies vying for the free-TV rights. Pay-TV rights in Greece are still to be awarded.
“ERT is a major player in the Greek TV landscape and has vast experience in broadcasting major sporting events. We are pleased to see their commitment to the championships, one of the three major sports properties in the world, and welcome them on board in our challenge to scale new heights for the UEFA EURO 2008,” UEFA chief executive officer Lars-Christer Olsson said. SPORTFIVE is UEFA’s exclusive sales agent for the sale of European broadcast rights relating to EURO 2008.
