The construction works started on the Priairie Gateway Soccer Complex, the new home for Major League Soccer (MLS) club in Commerce City, Colorado. “The Rapids stadium at Prairie Gateway will become the newest gem among the area’s major sports venues,” said Colorado Governor Bill Owens. “The investors who have made this a reality are giving this community far more than a sports venue and an economic engine – this is a facility that will bring families together in a wholesome setting.”
The facility, financed by Commerce City and Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE), who own the Rapids franchise, will have a capacity of 18,000 for sports events and 26,000 for concerts. There will also be retail and commercial space and it will be surrounded by twenty four youth soccer fields. “The Kroenke Sports organization could not be more proud to be starting work on the Prairie Gateway development,” KSE Executive Vice President Paul Andrews said. “We are making a commitment to providing a world class facility and world class youth sports programme in the heart of the West.”
According to Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber, the facility will be ready for the 2007 season. “As the world’s largest soccer complex, the new Rapids stadium in Commerce City will revolutionize the sport of soccer in Colorado and change the face of the sport in the region,” Garber said.
