German Berussia Dortmund plans stadium naming rights deal
The financially troubled Bundesliga club, which earlier this year was on the verge of bankruptcy and only survived because of a last-minute rescue package, has confirmed that they plan to sell the naming rights of the Westfalenstadion for the 2006/07 campaign.
With debts of around E 90m still plaguing the club, the newly-elected board believe they must sell the naming rights to their traditional venue if they are to stay in business. “We won’t be able to invest the money in bringing in new players, but will have to use it for reducing our debts,” director Hans- Joachim Watzke told media. At the moment we are in promising talks with four important companies.” The Westfalenstadion attracts Europe’s highest average attendance of approximately 77,000 each match and the club is confident that a deal will hand them an extra annual income of E 5m.
