Market research carried out by TNS-SOFRES has reveled that in a survey of 1,089 persons on 26 and 27 April for the L’Equipe newspaper, 56% of respondents chose Ligue 1 club Lyon (OL) compared with 12% for Marseille (OM) in second place and both Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Monaco in third and fourth place each with 5% of respondents. Saint-Etienne 26% came in fifth, Nantes in sixth with 22%, Bordeaux and Auxerre in joint seventh in 21%, Lens in ninth place with 17% and Lille in tenth with 13%. In terms of the club preferred by respondents most interested in football, Lyon came in first place with 21% in front of 18% for OM and PSG with 14%. Of those asked about Lyon’s future, the club now having won the Ligue 1 French championship four times in a row, most thought that the club needed Champions League success to become the most popular club throughout France. Furthermore, of those interested 91% thought that Lyon was capable of winning the Champions League.However, in a list of the 10 preferred clubs of those surveyed who were ‘very interested in football,’ 335 respondents, Lyon came in third place with 60% compared with 76% for OM and 75% for PSG.
