Infront Sports & Media has signed a non-exclusive radio agreement with RTL Radio Vermarktung GmbH & Co. KG for the radio broadcast rights for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup in the host territory of Germany. The agreement provides RTL the ability to sub-license the rights to up to 16 regional and local radio stations in Germany. This is the second radio deal to be agreed in Germany, following the major television and radio agreement with Germany's national broadcaster ARD/ZDF, which was announced in May 2004. The agreement gives RTL's sub-licensees access to all 64 matches of the FIFA World Cup and the 16 matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which kicks off on 15th June this year and will be played in Frankfurt, Nürnberg, Leipzig, Köln and Hannover. Interest in this event - seen as a dress-rehearsal for 2006 - is expected to be very high, reflecting the quality of the national teams taking part. As a result of Infront's enhanced focus on radio rights, radio coverage of the FIFA World Cup is becoming increasingly important as a category of the overall broadcast. The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the first time that radio rights were offered independently and separately from television, acknowledging the growth in radio and its importance as a communication medium. The 2006 event continues with this expansion. Oliver Seibert, an Executive Director of Infront said "This agreement continues with the principles of FIFA's distribution policy by helping to ensure in-depth coverage in the host territory".
