Czech Slovan Liberec docked points and fined following match-fixing

The Gambrinus Liga club has been deducted six points and fined 16,700 by the Football Association of the Czech Republic (CMFS) following investigations into match-fixing in the country. The move is prompted by the results of a police investigation and news of the scandal first surfaced in May 2004 when police wire-taps revealed attempts by officials and referees to influence the outcome of matches. The scandal has already resulted in the dismissal of CMFS vice-chairman Milan Brabec and will result in points deductions and fines for four clubs (FC Slovacko and FC Opava from the Gambrinus Liga; Viktoria Zizkov and FC Vitkovice from the Druha Liga) at the end of the season. The club's operations manager, Frantisek Myslivecek, was banned for two years and fined 3,340 for trying to bribe match officials ahead of a league match against Zlin. The club is the third club to be docked points and fined as part of the scandal that first surfaced in May 2004. Czech football faces further problems with news that Gambrinus Liga sponsors are becoming increasingly worried about falling attendances and the continuing investigation into match-fixing.
