Welsh Cardiff City faced on Wednesday a winding-up order at London’s High Court by the MH Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over an unpaid tax bill.

The club, which was not represented in court, was served with a dealine to 3 Feb 2010 to settle the tax debt and face a further hearing.

If the debt is still outstanding, the club could face being wound up and its assets could be sold off to pay the bill.

The HMRC debt is not the only debt, and the club has also to pay GBP 15 million to Langston Corporation owned by former owner Sam Hammam.

Meanwhile, the club announced that Malaysian businessman Datuk Chan Tien Ghee has joined the club's board and that he has already started to invest his money.

Chairman Peter Ridsdale insisted however that the club is on a sound financial footing.

"We've started paying it back, we have an agreed payment plan and they confirmed to us that they would go to court and withdraw any likely action and I'm told today they suspended that action exactly as agreed," Ridsdale said.
