With financial concerns arising in every corner of the sport, UEFA is ready to modify its regulations in an attempt to restrict club spending, despite the fact that the Premier League is not in agreement.

In a statement issued, President Michel Platini defended his position but agreed to explore the issues concerning English clubs.

As part of his mandate, Platini plans to push FIFA to implement bid limits for the 2018 World Cup and is prepared to involve England, Russia, Spain and Portugal, as well as Belgium and Holland, if unsuccessful.

Platini told The Telegraph that even though the Premier League is at odds with the agenda, he is not attempting to hinder English activity within the Champions League. He went on to explain that his actions are simply a response to requests from various European clubs to bring more equality to the game.

UEFA's strategy may also result in changes to its own policies, including wage caps based on turnover percentage, in order to give less fortunate clubs a more reasonable slice of the sport.

The UEFA strategy council is scheduled to meet in March to deliberate the available options, prior to submitting a recommendation to the executive committee. Platini indicated that it would be two or three years before any modifications made to UEFA Cup and Champions League entry regulations would be officially introduced. He further confirmed that such a decision would require the full support of clubs.
