Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is the latest member of the sport to publicly support the notion of a Champions League salary cap. In a statement made to the Die Welt, Rummenigge indicated that he advised UEFA president Michel Platini that salary costs need to be controlled.

Rummenigge believes that clubs are not able to reserve half of their budgets for salary expenses and that player wages are currently “irrationally high”. He went on to note that by mediating the issue, clubs would be forced to spend within their resources, decreasing the need for teams to operate and make poor financial decisions based merely on a quest for success.

Rummenigge backs the idea of introducing a licensing system to regulate salary expenses within the Champions League clubs, going on to raise the issue of economic crisis. The Bayern Munich leader declared that the effects of global downfall have already been identified in the sport within England, Spain and Italy, making monetary restraints a viable solution.

The statements issued by Rummenigge come on the heels of Michel Platini’s recent push for an overall salary cap to be imposed on clubs and not individual players, which would contravene EU law.
