LFP accusing Premier League with "financial doping"

Despite the fact that European sports ministers are set to meet later this week to discuss the concept of giving UEFA various new powers through modifications to European Union (EU) law, Frederic Thiriez, the president of the French Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) could not resist causing a stir in the meantime by accusing Premier League clubs of "financial doping," as reported by the Telegraph.

Although UEFA and French members feel something needs to be done about the financial situation between the Premier League and the remainder of the country, Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore thinks the concept is absurd.

Introducing a European regulator similar to that of France’s DNCG would result in too much meddling, according to the Premier League.

Following Scudamore's comments, Thiriez again stepped forward to express concern that the Premier League's financial power serves to threaten justice in the sport. Thiriez went on to note that the idea of establishing such a regulator in Europe would help to bring "financial fair play" to the world of football.

The proposals put forth by the French would allow UEFA to establish club spending caps and obtain some control over young player transfers, in addition to other methods of control.
