French Canal Plus backs radical moves to increase scoring
France - 28 February, 2006
After paying EUR 1.8 billion for TV rights to French Ligue 1, broadcaster Canal Plus has backed a move looking into radical ways to increase scoring in the country’s top division. Ligue 1 officials have appointed Michel Hidalgo, the coach who led the country to the 1984 European Championship, to find a way to liven up the league, which is averaging fewer than two goals a game.
According to the UK Observer newspaper, measures that have been discussed include a penalty shootout to decide draws, two points for a non-scoreless draw and a bonus point for a victory by two or more goals. Canal Plus fears that viewers will start tuning out if the negative tactics continue.
