EU to examine TV rights cash distribution & salary caps
FIFA & UEFA - 07 March, 2006
A wide-ranging look into European football will investigate how TV money is distributed and will look into the feasibility of a salary cap, according to Jose Luis Arnaut, the point man on the committee.
The review was launched by the United Kingdom under its European Union presidency last year and will look at an array of football-related topics. The commission will examine club financing and ownership, sports agent regulations, match fixing and corruption and the use of football to promote a healthier lifestyle.
UEFA, the governing body for football in Europe, agreed to lead the project at a meeting with FIFA, European Sports Ministers and the European Commission. Arnaut said his investigation would find ways to strengthen football authorities' current efforts to “encourage and support high standards of financial management, prudent operation within budgets and corporate governance.” Arnaut said the study would take a look at salary caps, an idea first put forth at the end of the 1990s. “The game has changed immeasurably since the days when clubs were the sole preserve of their local community,” Arnaut said. “They are now global brands with the financial and social impact that goes with that.”
