New TV deal could cut SPL rights revenue in half

As anticipated, the Scottish Premier League (SPL) may be forced to accept a broadcasting deal that falls short of the one previously in place with Setanta.

As reported by the Daily Express, the latest offer involving Sky and ESPN is valued at slightly more than GBP 60 million. Set to last five years, the SPL could face a rights revenue decrease in excess of 50 percent by teaming up with the two companies.

Not surprisingly, while a drop in revenue would have an effect on all member clubs, it’s the smallest ones that are expected to suffer the most.

Earlier this week, a few cash-stricken clubs pushed negotiators to ink a deal, in an attempt to avoid a total loss of rights income.

However, more stable clubs feel that the SPL should be more patient with the broadcasting rights. While inking deal would bring some relief to the league, struggling clubs would have no choice but to implement budget and wage cuts.

Unfortunately, the SPL has little to choose from, with Sky and ESPN presenting themselves as the only interested bidders.

The SPL hopes to combat the pressure by working towards package modifications, such as limiting the number of games aired or agreeing to a shorter-term deal.
