Kentaro reign threatened by appeals court ruling

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
An appeals court ruling is blocking free-to-air broadcasts of Swedish top-tier football, a decision that will affect the league, distributors and broadcasters.

Kentaro is partway through a five-year deal to distribute the matches. TV4 had been airing the matches for free TV. But pay-broadcaster Canal Plus, which also broadcasts matches, filed damage claims for USD 15.4 million, claiming Kentaro essentially sold the same rights twice.

That has put Kentaro in a difficult situation. A million-plus dollar fine could be levied against the distributor is TV4 shows any matches before arbitration settles the matter. Canal Plus has asked for an injunction to prohibit TV4 from showing any matches before a final decision is made.
