British Telecom (BT) announced it has won the rights to carry 242 near-live Premier League football matches each season, joining with BSkyB for the next three years.
The contract means fans will be able to watch league matches on a pay-per-view basis, without the need for an upfront television subscription. The matches will be offered via BT Vision, the next-generation TV service due to launch later this year. The matches will generally be available from 10 p.m. the day of the match for a period of fifty hours.
“We’re delighted to have won this bid,” said Dan Marks, CEO of BT Vision. “This is a landmark moment for sports viewing in the UK as BT Vision customers will have great control, convenience and choice over the games they want to watch without the need for an upfront subscription. This is a great example of the added value that BT broadband delivers.”
Earlier this month, the Premier League awarded Sky four packages of live rights, each of 23 matches, with the remaining two packages going to Irish-based broadcaster Setanta.
