German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has signed on as a commentator for Deutsche Telekom, which owns Internet coverage rights for German Bundesliga matches.
In December, DT, which is Europe’s biggest telecom group in terms of sales, won the rights to show league matches for three seasons starting this summer, but has not unveiled its coverage plans.
The Bundesliga and Deutsche Telekom disagree about how the telecom can use the rights, which it is believed to be interested in sharing with pay-TV broadcaster Premiere.
Terms of Beckenbauer’s contract were not released.
Beckenbauer led West Germany to the 1974 soccer World Cup championship, and did it again in 1990 as Germany’s coach. He currently is the head of Germany’s organising committee for the 2006 World Cup, which kicks off on June 9.
