BBC lands SPL highlights, online content

BBC Scotland has pushed back into the football market, landing a deal with the Scottish Premier League, for a highlights show and online package.

The BBC will broadcast a new, half-hour highlights package during the coming season, the final season of Scottish Television's present agreement with the SPL. That sets up a duel for viewers between BBC and Scotsport, which has had a highlight show running for 50 seasons.

BBC Scotland has also bought the rights to show clips of goals and key incidents on its website. Content will be online within around 24 hours of a match. Setanta has exclusive live broadcasting rights.

BBC said its highlight package was to provide an alternative to Scotsport's show, or give those who could not wait up for the show a chance to take in highlights on BBC.

"Under the new deal the BBC will be showing a midweek, weekly highlights program lasting 30 minutes, but it will not stop anyone else from showing highlights of the SPL next season," said Greig Mailer, head of communications for the SPL. "We still have a deal with STV for highlights, which they use for their Scotsport programme. They are in the final year of their contract with us, which we very much hope will continue.

"The timing of the two shows is to be determined but STV have certain rights in terms of their coverage. They will have first access to the highlights on a terrestrial platform. Both stations will have access to every SPL game."

The new contract signed by the BBC allows the broadcaster to maintain its exclusive radio rights package until the end of the 2009-2010 season with a two-year option to extend the deal.

That gives the SPL more than GBP 60 million in commercial deals over the next three years.

The BBC said a big lure was adding the online package to the deal, which will allow the broadcaster to air key goals and controversial plays within a day after a given match has ended.

"One of the reasons we have entered into this agreement with the SPL is that we feel there will be demand for video content online, which people can access when they want to," said Ewan Angus, head of sport for BBC Scotland. "That will be all about creating talking points.

"There is a complicated set of restrictions about when you can make footage available, but it will be within a day or so of a match taking place."
