Mediapro may sue Sogecable after latest squabble

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Audiovisual Sport (AVS), a division of Sogecable, sold broadcasting rights of a Barcelona match to Gestevision Telecinco SA Mediapro is now contemplating legal action against Sogecable, according to El Economista, citing unnamed sources.

La Sexta, Mediapro's free-to-air associate, was offered a chance to air the Barcelona-Villarreal premier league match, but La Sexta turned it down and said it would rather have the rights to a Real Madrid match.

According to Spanish law, one football match of "general interest", which usually involves the two top clubs in the league, such as Barcelona and Madrid, must be televised over a free-to-air channel once a week.

AVS decides which match will be broadcast over FTA and which will go to Sogecable, to be aired on its pay-TV service.

Mediapro contends a contract with AVS allows it to choose which match will go to which broadcaster and that the decision to sell the rights to La Sexta rival Telecinco breaches that contract, El Economista reported.

AVS and Mediapro are currently in a legal battle over the details of the contract and the broadcasting rights for Spain's premier league football.
