LFP argues rejection of tender could lead to individual sales
France - 21 January, 2008
In rebutting Canal Plus' arguments for a new tender, the French Professional Football League has said it could lead to an individual selling of rights by various clubs.
It's part of the league's argument in front of the TGI, a French district court. The court is hearing a request from Canal Plus, which holds the current rights, to suspend the top-tier tender as offered by the LFP.
The tender is due to end at the close of January. Canal Plus wants it delayed beyond 19 Feb., when its court case is to be heard.
The new tender was lengthened from three years to four, and the LFP would hold the image rights to the matches broadcast. The number of packages offered increased to 12.
The LFP asked for the changes to keep the market competitive, especially after Canal Plus said it would not meet the EUR 600 million it has paid for the current rights.
