Eighteen live matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be broadcast free-to-air via Germany’s RTL station, following a deal made with pay-TV network Premiere. All World Cup games will now be broadcast free-to-air, in combination with public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.
Premiere has held the rights to the World Cup games since 2005. In previous seasons, live matches were offered by Premiere in Austria and Germany via pay-TV. However, Premiere has switched routes, noting financial reasons behind its latest course of action.
RTL began airing in 1984 and is considered German’s leading free-to-air broadcaster. The station is a member of the RTL Group, Europe’s largest TV and radio company.
