LFP makes changes as rights offer nears

With it now able to offer four-year contracts, the French Professional Football League (LFP) is making some changes with its broadcasting packages.

The league is examining moving free TV highlights to Sunday evening, and has divided the rights packages into 12 different groups.

France Télévisions acquired the highlights for the 2007-2008 season for EUR 25 million, and shows them Sunday afternoon. A highlights time shift could help France Télévisions earn more advertising revenue.

The Saturday evening highlight show on pay-broadcaster Canal Plus traditionally grabs the higher ratings.

Canal Plus, which currently holds live match rights, has figures its subscriber base will fall by at least a quarter if it does not win the new rights packages. The pay broadcaster has said it will not pay more than the EUR 600 million-a-year it currently offers for rights.
