The first eight matches in the 2008 European Championship Football Tournament have an astounding percentage of viewers in Portugal, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Austria. There were not as many viewers in the UK.
An average of more than 70 percent of all television viewers tuned in to the matches.
82.5 percent of all Dutch viewers were watching in the Netherlands and Portugal match.
The numbers show 2.6 million viewers in Portugal (more than 80 percent share) watched the opening match against Turkey.
The match between Switzerland and Czech Republic attracted 2 million viewers from Switzerland - a 70 percent share.
German broadcaster ZDF reported 10.2 million (a 54.6 percent share) viewers tuned in for the opening match between co-host Switzerland and the Czech Republic and 10.5 million (a 40.5 percent share) watched the Portugal and Turkey game. 23.7 million viewers - 69.6 percent of all home viewers - tuned in to their winning game against Poland.
Viewing figures generally across Europe were also high, even during "neutral matches" - illustrated by the 14.9 million viewers in Germany who watched the match between the Netherlands and Italy.
England's absence from Euro 2008 has a significant impact on the overall television viewing figures in the country.
An average of only 30 percent of viewers in the UK watched the games. This is about half of the figures calculated for participating nations.
According to the Media Guardian, Switzerland and Czech Republic match attracted just 2.5 million viewers - a 27 percent share, while ITV's coverage of Portugal against Turkey was watched by 4 million, a share of just 20 percent.
ITV however claims that England’s absence has only had a slight impact on its advertising income. The broadcaster said it has signed up more than 150 brands to advertise during EURO 2008, including a campaign with Bet365 showing live odds during every game.
UEFA feels that the broadcasting of the games is still holding a fair amount of British enthusiasm, despite the fact only teams of other nations are competing.
UEFA is excited about the percentage of fans viewing the games from home overall in the countries that the teams are representing, and the viewers in the UK regardless of the circumstance.
"We cannot expect to have 25 million British TV viewers for our games," UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said. "It is obvious that had England been in the competition we would have got more viewers.
"The figures in Germany are stunning and the figures for the Netherlands-Italy game in Holland are probably an all-time high for Dutch television."
