European satellite and cable broadcaster Eurosport is pursuing the international television rights of the Bundesliga, the top German football league.
Eurosport, which broadcasts in 59 countries around Europe, announced that negotiations have already begun.
The broadcaster intends to use these rights on its channel throughout Europe, and has no intentions of distributing the rights to others.
Eurosport’s bid is expected to fall between EUR 16 to 20 million, a large investment for the broadcaster which would be difficult to refinance through advertising and charges.
The German Football League (DFL), which currently net around EUR 20 million annually for the international rights, is likely to raise the cost at the first year to EUR 30 million, then increase the price in intervals for the coming seasons, eventually bringing the price up to EUR 40 million over the three years tendered.
Currently the international TV rights for the Bundesliga are distributed through Sportsman Media Group, in a contract which runs to the end of the 08/09 season.
About 190 countries receive live coverage, as well as highlights and delayed coverage of the league.
