ESPN is looking at U.K. broadcast rights for the Premier league, with the U.S. cable broadcaster trying to expand its European base.
BSkyB and Setanta hold the rights for live matches through the conclusion of the 2009-2010 season. More than GBP 1.7 billion was paid out for the three-season deals.
"We're going to work on getting as local as we can. We want to deliver product that is relevant in each country," ESPN president George Bodenheimer told the Financial Times. "It's a country-by-country approach. We want to be investors wherever the top sports product is."
Disney-owned ESPN has increased its online presence on the continent, buying cricket website Cricinfo and rugby site Scrum.com . It holds portions of rights for basketball and football in the U.S.
