UEFA goes to court to put knockout rounds on pay TV
FIFA & UEFA - 12 February, 2008
UEFA will head to European Court in an effort to move its knockout rounds onto pay TV.
UEFA wants all knockout round contests to be available on pay broadcasters in Britain. Matches between British teams would stay on terrestrial channels.
That flies in the face of the 1996 Broadcasting Act, which provides that live action from the World Cup, EURO tournaments and FA Cup Final be on free-to-air TV, along with the Olympics and Wimbledon.
UEFA denied it was doing this for financial reasons, but making the later rounds available only on pay TV would cause a considerable cash flow for the governing body.
