Canal Plus and the French football league (LFP) probably are coming away happy with the latest TV deal, despite all the legal challenges that preceded it.
Canal Plus vowed to pay less than the EUR 600 million it was currently forking out for rights, and it did, with a cost of EUR 460 million. The LFP is receiving more than the EUR 653 million it currently receives, though the bump — with an extra season included — is only to EUR 668 million a season.
Tough to tell if the legal hassles were worth it, but both sides probably are relieved. Canal Plus had challenged the LFP's move to a four-year tender from a three-year one, its move to split the packages and its insistence on retaining broadcast images.
Orange, however, won the rights for a key package of matches played on Saturday nights for a reported EUR 208 million.
