A GBP 80-million-a-year bar has been set as the Football Association Cup and English international matches are set to be auctioned off.
The Football Association is overseeing the auction in hopes that competition among broadcasters and substantial audiences will generate more than GBP 400 million in the four years after summer 2008.
The new rights package is hoped to generate more than GBP 400 million because commercial broadcasters – including ITV, NTL and Five – are interested in the high, largely male audience that football delivers.
The Premier League has re-auctioned its rights for 60 percent more than previously. Those numbers have given the FA hope after enduring a 28 percent cut in broadcast rights fees at the last auction.
Last season, viewing figures for BBC games were up by 26 percent.
"Essentially, these are the only major set of sports rights that are coming to the market in 2007 and, combined with the England property, the FA Cup games deliver audiences that even entertainment shows struggle to deliver on a consistent basis," said Chris Hayward, head of broadcast at Zenith Optimedia.
