UEFA announces new media rights deals

UEFA has secured a few more media rights deals. Rights to its Champions League, Super Cup and Cup in sub-Saharan Africa - other than the Republic of South Africa and Sudan - were up for grabs for the 2009 to 2012 seasons.

Free-to-air rights to the Champions League have been granted to CFI and will be aired via its pan-African broadcasting network. CFI plans to pair each live match with a highlights programme and will feature delayed matches and magazine programmes, providing first-rate exposure for fans. SuperSport currently holds Pay TV rights to the Champions League.

Meanwhile, AIT in Nigeria and MBC in Mauritius secured Champions League and Cup deals. Similar to CFI, the broadcasters will air a corresponding highlights game with each match, free-to-air. Internet and mobile platforms will also be used.

UEFA continues to contemplate other free-to-air offers for the Cup. The Association has expressed sincere interest in providing quality exposure to as many African fans as possible. UEFA advocates the use of media rights to keep African players connected with fans from their home continent.
