UEFA strikes TV deals in Spain and Greece

UEFA has inked television rights deals for the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in Spain and Greece, as part of three-year deals.

The first-choice package in Spain was awarded to Antena 3, while Mega Channel has the same rights in Greece.

The deals run until 2009, and rights include the first-choice game and a highlights programme every in the centralised part of the UEFA Cup competition from the quarterfinals through to the final, as well as the UEFA Super Cup match.

UEFA said on Tuesday that agreements had been concluded following a very competitive sales process in both countries, with many broadcasters showing significant interest.

Antena 3 recently acquired the UEFA Champions League rights for the 2006-09 period. Mega Channel has previous experience as a longstanding UEFA Champions League rights holder.

The UEFA Cup was revamped for the 2004-2005 season in an attempt to enhance the tournament’s image, a 40-team group stage was introduced and the competition branding was given a major overhaul. Following discussions with European clubs, UEFA's Executive Committee decided in June 2005 to centrally commercialise the later stages of the competition.

“In both Spain and Greece we are delighted that the outcome of the sales process means we will be working with such highly professional commercial organisations,” UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson said.  “UEFA Cup rights have never before been centralised to this extent and we are positive that the audience-drawing power and promotional commitment of both Antena 3 and Mega to the UEFA Cup will bring enormous benefits to the competition.”

In both countries, discussions are continuing with regard to the sale of the remaining rights to all matches not included in the Antena 3 or Mega packages, which are the second, third and fourth-choice games for each match-night.
