The Italian Professional Football League (Lega Calcio) hopes to bank a minimum of EUR 250 million from its bid process for the Serie A and Serie B television and media rights.
The bid stage in the tender for the upcoming two seasons (08/09-09/10) will be ending today (Wednesday).
While live television rights to Italian Serie A are sold individually by each club, the rest of the rights are sold collectively by the league.
The rights tendered by the league include free-to-air TV rights to Serie A and Serie B match highlights, live TV rights to Serie B, radio rights for both divisions and live radio and television rights for the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) and the Super Cup, the annual match played between the Serie A and Coppa Italia winners.
The top package, which includes the Serie A match highlights, is marked with a minimum price tag of EUR 70 million per season (EUR 140 million). Public service broadcaster, Rai is fighting to regain the rights from commercial broadcaster Mediaset, who has held the rights for the last three seasons and paid EUR 61.57 million per season back in 2005.
The free-to-air broadcasting rights to Serie B highlights are tagged EUR 16 million minimum per season (EUR 32 million), while the third package of live rights for Serie B is priced EUR 10 million per season (EUR 20 million) for pay television, and EUR 5 million per season (EUR 10 million) for the free-to-air rights.
Minimum bid for the radio rights was set at EUR 1 million per season (EUR 2 million) for both Serie A and Serie B.
In a bid to maximize its income, the LNP divided the Coppa Italia rights into four packages aiming to raise a minimum of EUR 46 million.
The first four rounds are priced EUR 2 million, last 16 to the final are priced EUR 28 million, the international rights are priced EUR 10 million and the radio rights are marked with EUR 6 million minimum.
Rai and La7, the digital terrestrial broadcaster, shared the Coppa Italia rights in the last three years.
Additional EUR 1.7 million is expected from the Super Cup rights, which were split into three packages (domestic, international and radio). The rights were held by Rai in the last two years.
