Sogecable strikes extension with Real Madrid

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Sogecable will retain the rights for Spanish Real Madrid next season, coming right after the television group fought Mediapro in a battle over Spanish football rights.

Mediapro also was bidding on Real Madrid's rights, but the club decided on an extension with Sogecable. Real Madrid and Sogecable have been together since 1999.

It was Real Madrid that kicked off the feud between Mediapro and Sogecable. In November 2006, Mediapro acquired the rights to Real Madrid's matches up to the end of the 2012-2013 season for EUR 1.1 billion.

Sogecable claimed breach of contract with Mediapro, which had set up Audiovisual Sport with its rival as a means to exploit the rights.

Sogecable claimed that Mediapro had agreed that it would refrain from exploiting the rights to the league independently of Audiovisual Sport. Mediapro claimed that the deal was void because the ownership of Audiovisual Sport is unresolved.
