Sogecable stopped from blocking Mediapro match access

A Spanish court has rejected Sogecable's request that it block rival Mediapro from entering and broadcasting football matches.

Until a final ruling in the case is made, Mediapro will be able to access matches and air them. Sogecable and AudioVisual Sports (AVS) said they will appeal the setback.

The enmity felt between the two rivals has reached a boiling point of late. After Sogecable and Mediapro formed AVS in July 2006 as a joint venture – with Sogecable being the majority holder – to broadcast Spanish football matches, Mediapro bought the rights to future matches on a club-by-club basis.

Sogecable said Mediapro owed it money from the formation of AVS and alleged breach of contract because Mediapro was buying club rights on its own. Mediapro countered that it was the one owed money, and said the contract between the two broadcasters does not rule out competition in the future.
