UEFA will no require a licence anyone wishing to show EURO 2008 matches on regular-sized television screens or at private viewings.
Home parties and the like will be clear. A licence will be needed only for commercial viewings, such as if an entry fee is charged, or a group is sponsoring the viewing. At that point, the fee will depend on the size of the screen, at EUR 6 a square metre per match).
Martin Kallen, COO of EURO 2008, said he did not want to make the event inaccessible.
"The UEFA European Football Championship has become far more than a football tournament consisting of 31 matches," Kallen said. "Nowadays, it is a festival that everyone can take part in. We want the whole of Europe to join in the fun. The licence requirements are, therefore, deliberately being kept simple and transparent."
At some point this summer – the date has yet to be determined – licence applications can be made via www.euro2008.com. All revenue generated by licence fees will be donated to a charitable cause, to be used for fan-related projects.
Special rules apply for events in the official fan zones in the host cities and UBS-sponsored public viewing arenas.
