FIFA to take a look at new Italian goal line technology
FIFA & UEFA - 08 March, 2006
A new way at using technology to determine whether a ball has crossed the goal line, presented by the Italian Football Federation (IFF), will be examined by FIFA at its annual meeting on March 4, according to Reuters.
Unlike previous experiments, the new system does not use a computer chip implanted in the ball. High-performance digital cameras would judge a disputed goal. FIFA experimented with a “smart ball” at last year’s Under-17 World Championship in Peru and at last year’s World Club Championship in Japan. The “smart ball” sent a signal to the referee through his wristband or an earpiece when it crossed the goal line. The technology will not be used at this summer’s World Cup in Germany.
“The technology isn’t perfect yet,” says Jan Runau, a spokesman with sportswear manufacturer Adidas-Salomon, which supplies the official game balls for the tournaments. “We have to be 1,000 percent certain that it works perfectly before we can deploy it in professional soccer games.”
