Watford using new technology at its stadium

English Watford is now using advanced voice, video and data communication systems as part of its new technology at its Vicarage Road stadium.

The new network delivers 10 Gbit/s to every section of the ground and is supporting a smart card system that allows fans to enter the stadium faster than before.

The fixed and wireless network supports a Cisco Unified Communication system, video streaming and Cisco Connected Real Estate solution. The new technology will not only change the fans experience but will also save money for the club.

Katie Wareham, head of Watford's new projects, said the club has one of the most powerful and fastest communications network in Europe even though it does not have the financial clout of other football clubs.

"The Cisco solution means we can give fans a host of innovative services that transforms

their experience when visiting Vicarage Road and increase revenue potential outside the football season," she said.

"'And we have an infrastructure that is more than capable of supporting additional services and applications for at least the next 10 years."

The network infrastructure supports a smart card system that is integrated into its customer relationship management system, providing management with invaluable information about fans.

It will also support mobile devices on match days and will communicate via the network to view real-time video for better crowd monitoring and control. It will soon support other services like video-on-demand in corporate boxes and access to club and match information.

The club also plans to combine the venue's building management systems across the Cisco network so services such as lighting, heating, closed-circuit television security and digital signs can be managed from a central point and at a more economic cost.

It is part of a GBP 32.5 million redevelopment of the Vicarage Road venue to improve access, seating, corporate hospitality and other facilities.

The Cisco Unified Communications system is comprised of 140 Cisco Unified IP Phones around the stadium which will provide sophisticated telephony services such as video conferencing and the delivery of real-time information to handset displays.

It is being installed by The Project Network while Fortress GB is delivering the smartcard system.
