FIFA backed steps for use of technology to assist match officials

President Sepp Blatter has approved plans to use technology in a bid to aid match officials making the decision whether a ball passed the goal line. The technology to be used is developed by the German sports goods manufacturer adidas. The company installed a microchip on ball that will help to test a possible solution to goal-line disputes during matches. Blatter has approved to run a first test in England at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on February. FIFA officials have backed the experiment, but reiterated its opposition to the use of video replays to resolve controversial refereeing decisions. Volker Roth, chairman of UEFA's Referees Committee has also dismissed the idea of using video replays for goal-line decisions, but backed the introduction of a microchip-contained ball. The English Football Association has expressed its willingness to “discuss and consider any form of goal-line technology that would improve decision-making while not disrupting the game”.
