Beginning in August, football fans will be able use their PC's to stream live football matches through Virgin Media's website.
The decision was made after the company announced that it had bought the premier league rights to all matches. Some clips will be free but pricing for the matches has not been announced.
Subscribers will be able to download songs free of charge and watch other sports such as motorsport and snooker. They will also be able to watch live feeds of Big Brother when it is aired later on in the year.
Customers can upload video content now but the company has linked up with online photo developer Photobox, which will let Virgin customers upload pictures to the site and get them developed and delivered.
Photobox is offering Virgin customers 30 free prints when they subscribe but the offer is only good for 30 days. Delivery costs will depend on weight and size but prices start at GBP 1.50 for 1 gram standard postage.
Revamping the company's website is part of a strategy to broaden its customer base. The company is also extending its free TV offer to customers in areas that are not connected to its cable service.
The set-top box offers access to 40 free-to-air TV channels, 25 digital radio stations, along with an eight-day, Virgin branded, on-screen TV guide, plus access to interactive content.
It will be free to any Virgin Media non-cable customer subscribing to broadband and the Talk Anytime service at a cost of GBP 19.99 a month. For non-cable customers subscribing to broadband service only, a one-time charge of GBP 40 will apply.
This seems somewhat expensive considering Freeview boxes can be bought for around GBP 20, but the set top box is roughly the size of a video tape and is equipped with "remote eye" technology so it can be hidden from view.
Virgin broadband prices begin at GBP 18.00 per month for 2Mbits/sec, GBP 25 per month for 4Mbits/sec and GBP 35.00 per month for up to 10Mbits/sec
