Africa News reports that construction for the new Green Point Stadium as well as all other stadiums and facilities will be complete by the end of this year ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup competition to be hosted by South Africa. Spokesperson Rich Mkhondo has said that all aspects will be taken care of on schedule, including roads and reliable power supply.

Many of the areas, Nelson Mandela Bay, Durban, Polokwane, Nelspruit and Soccer City are expected to be completed as early as October 2009.

The event will boost the local economy, and has already begun to do so. More than 2,100 jobs were created during the building of Green Point Stadium, located in Cape Town. More than 1,100 skilled workers are also being trained onsite during the project, which will prepare them for future work. Ninety-nine percent of the workers on the project, under contractors Murray & Roberts and WBHO, are local residents. Suppliers are also from the local municipal area.

Onsite training equips participants with various skill sets including computer skills, construction supervisor training, and management development and training. Other jobs involved are health and safety officers, bricklayers, crane operators and concrete hands.
