FIFA will hold South African hosts to stadium deadlines
World Cup 2010 - 27 November, 2007
South African cities could lose their host status is they miss stadium construction deadlines.
FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke made the warning after Port Elizabeth and Cape Town revealed construction delays and builders' strikes were holding up progress at Durban's new stadium.
"If we have a feeling that a stadium will not be ready then we can change to another stadium," Valcke said at a news briefing. "It's not just limited to the labour issue; there's a need to deliver the stadium by a certain date because there's a need for a clear seating plan so we can print the tickets. We need to know how many seats are in the stadium and that's why there are deadlines which will have to be observed."
Valcke, talking directly of Port Elizabeth, added that will be no more deadlines missed.
