The Primera Liga club announced that construction work on the club’s new stadium would begin on April 17 following the town’s authorities agreeing to a new 40-year lease for the stadium. Parts of the old stadium will begin to be disassembled before the full demolition begins in May.
The total price of the project is expected to be EUR 70.7 million with final completion scheduled for May of 2008.
The plans were presented by Zaragoza mayor Juan Alberto Belloch, club president Alfonso Solans and architect Antonio Gaspar. Belloch said the new stadium would be a multi-purpose facility, unlike the current stadium’s football-specific use.
“The club has given a lot to the city – feelings, passion and a collective spirit,” Belloch said.
Solans added: “The project is going ahead because Zaragoza fans need a new ground. The one we have is too antiquated.”
