Dynamo stadium gets backer in historically black college

MLS Houston Dynamo picked up an investor for its new downtown stadium, as historically black university Texas Southern will help with the tab.

Texas Southern athletic director Charles McClelland said the move made sense. His athletic programs could use the stadium. Investing in a stadium would be about the same as what the school pays for rent across the city.

And, unlike paying rent elsewhere, the university would have a stake in the new venture.

"Over the history of our athletic program we have to go out and rent out Reliant and Robertson Stadiums," McClelland told KHOU, a TV station based in Houston. "So, we think it would be within the scope of what we're already paying out to rent those facilities."

The agreement has not been formally signed, but the commitment is deemed large for the stadium's future.

Dynamo president Oliver Luck said the stadium would come to fruition thanks to TSU's investment, believed to be a multi-million USD payment. Luck also said it made sense in that the stadium will be located near the rail line, allowing TSU students easy access to the stadium.
