Camp Nou, the home stadium for Spanish Barcelona, will have an increased capacity following the third expansion in stadium history.
The plans are to increase the seating by 15,000 to 20,000, allowing the grounds to seat perhaps as many as 118,000. Camp Nou currently seats 98,787. The expansion will make it one of the biggest stadiums in the world, surpassing Azteca in Mexico and Maracana in Brazil.
Capacity will be increased in a third tier, and new VIP boxes are also planned.
President Joan Laporta's trumpeted the expansion during his re-election campaign last August.
"There has been talk of completing the top level of the stadium, which means making all the seats covered," said finance director Alfonso Castro.
The largest stadium in the world is located in Asia. The May Day stadium in North Korea, alsoknown as the Rungnado May First Stadium, can seat 150,000 people and the Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta, or the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, can hold 120,000.
