The Bundesliga club are hoping to build a new stadium which could replace their outdated Bruchweg-Stadion. The club, who is approaching only their second year in the Bundesliga this summer, were handed their European debut after being drawn in UEFA’s fair-play draw, but had to stage their win over Armenian side MIKA in Frankfurt’s recently opened Commerzbank-Arena due to a lack of adequate facilities in Mainz.
“The game in Frankfurt has shown how much we need a modern stadium. We are the only [Bundesliga] club without a proper ground,” declared managing director Christian Heidel. While most Bundesliga grounds had been rebuilt for the FIFA World Cup next summer, the Bruchweg- Stadion offers only 11,600 seats and Heidel fears that the club won’t be able to compete with their league rivals without a new arena. According to Heidel, the club will now focus on plans to erect a 30,000-capacity stadium somewhere in the outskirts of Mainz.
