The Major League Soccer (MLS) club New York/ New Jersey Metrostars is a matter of weeks away from finalizing an US$80m deal for a new, 25,000-seat stadium. Recent negotiations with the MLS have been productive, says New Jersey Sports Authority president George Zoffinger. "It's fair to say that the sports authority and the MetroStars have come to an understanding on each of our economic roles regarding the stadium," said Zoffinger. "Now we just need to reach an understanding with Harrison and Hudson County." The financing has yet to be decided on, but previous reports have costs being split equally by the Sports Authority, the club and Harrison and Hudson Counties. The Hudson County Improvement Authority has discussed floating bonds to cover part of the construction costs. If this funding does not materialise, the franchise may have to commit up to US$30m of its own money. According to Assembly Spokesman Albio Sires, the Sports Authority will manage the stadium costs. "The governor has committed to expanding the sports authority's role to include this new stadium," he said. "It's a good venture for the area, and for the state. I'm comfortable that everything will fall into place."
