Martin O'Neill, English Aston Villa FC manager, represented Barclays Spaces for Sports at the official opening of the Aston Park Sports Pitch in Aston.
Barclays Spaces for Sports, along with the Football Foundation, donated GBP 600,000 to build the site with fencing, floodlights and an artificial grass playing field.
The site is next to Villa Park stadium and has a range of activities for the local community, including football and hockey.
Since it announced the GBP 30 million investment programme in September 2004, Barclays Spaces for Sports has opened more than 120 sites and awarded more than 2,600 coaching packs to local communities.
It has given over 330,000 underprivileged people the chance to benefit from sports, with GBP 2 million invested so far in the Midlands region.
With the backing of Aston Villa FC, the Aston project will receive another GBP 45,000 from Barclays to ensure the maintenance of the site, and for kits and equipment that will cost GBP 5,000.
It is the first phase in a GBP 10.5 million redevelopment of Aston Park, with further financial support from other sources, including the Birmingham City Council and Aston Pride New Deal for Communities.
