The FIFA Executive Committee said it was satisfied concerning the status of preparations for the 2010 World Cup, but warned South Africa to get started on building the venues it is going to use.
After a two-day meeting in Zurich, the committee heard the latest progress report on plans for the event.
"The Executive Committee listened with satisfaction to a report on the status of preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and underlined its support for the Local Organising Committee," said a FIFA spokesman. "However, the Executive Committee stated that it was now expecting work to begin, particularly on constructing and renovating the stadiums."
It also confirmed the dates for the competition would run from June 11 to July 11. The allocation of places per confederation will be the same as for the 2006 event in Germany.
The official bidding procedure has started for the 2014 tournament, which will be held in South America. The final decision will be made in November 2007.
