Funding planned for Real Salt Lake stadium

After making a decision to stop funding, Utah State leaders announced a modified plan to finance a football stadium for Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The new plan calls for less money being used from county hotel-tax revenue, approximately USD 15 million over 20 years.

It would then force the county to reimburse the state USD 20 million that lawmakers allotted in 2005 for parking at the South Towne Expo Center, according to state and county officials. The state would then provide parking for the stadium.

In return, authorities may agree to stop a bill that would take USD 15 million in annual restaurant-tax revenue from county funds. The changes could prevent a potential property-tax increase as well as the prospect of recreation centers being closed.

"If the war of the Legislature on Salt Lake County will end, I'm on board," said Councilman Joe Hatch, who confirmed the terms of the agreement.

Spokesmen for RSL would only say "nothing's changed" when asked to comment on the financial matter or whether Salt Lake owner Dave Checketts would agree to the deal.

Checketts is due in Salt Lake City next week for a function that is planned prior to talks of the stadium.
