Manchester United closes in on record shirt sponsorship deal
England - 28 February, 2006
In a move that could re-establish them as the richest club in the world, the Premiere League club is closing in on a GBP 60 million, four-year shirt sponsorship deal with Gibralter-based online gambling firm Mansion.
The deal would replace the GBP 9 million-a-year deal with Vodafone, which was voided two years early and expires at the end of the current season. It would also average better than the GBP 50 million deal fellow English Premiere League club Chelsea signed with Samsung and the GBP 100 million deal Arsenal signed with Emirates through the 2020/21 season.
Mansion reportedly beat out Middle Eastern airways Qatar Airways and Air Etihad to win the race. The announcement would be a positive development for the Malcolm Glazer, whose family controversially purchased the club for GBP 800 million last year. Malcolm’s son, Bryan, spearheaded the search for the sponsor.
The deal might move Manchester United to the top of Deloitte’s Football Money League. For the first time in years, Manchester United was knocked from the top spot by Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid when the list was released this year.
